Chesnut WoodpeckerWelcome to the Tropical Bird Photography website. This website is the beginning of a journey and the culmination of a life long passion. While this site is primarily dedicated to bird photography, especially the birds of the tropic/neotropical areas of the world, it is also a showcase for other nature images (I hope you don't mind).

It is my intent that this website not only be visually enlightening but also promote conservation in South America, Central America (from Mexico to Costa Rica to Panama), the Caribbean islands and all offshore islands associated with those areas. I believe if you see how beautiful these birds are that you will be compelled to protect them too. Hopefully that doesn't sound too idealistic. It is important to remember however that these countries have the richest biodiversity and largest rain forest area on the planet containing over 3700 species. More than 300 of the regions birds are threatened with extinction and a similar number are classified as near-threatened. Most North American migrant species winter in Neotropical forest habitats, so many of the birds you see here may also be found in your backyard as they migrate during the spring or fall.

Enough of the lecture. Please enjoy the images to follow and as they say "come watch us grow". This site will hopefully expand exponentially as I travel more and I am able to bring back images from different areas. So far, the majority of these images result from stays in Costa Rica and Trinidad with additional trips to Ecuador, Panama and Belize planned for the very near future.

Thank you for dropping by. If you have any comments or suggestions please use the "contact" page. I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Jean M. Hoogacker
